Annus Mirabilis

While trying to translate this poem, I became very much aware of the cultural differences between the puritan England of the earlier twentieth century and the much more broad-minded and relaxed France of the time. As far as structure is concerned I felt forced to deviate from the original metre at times and squeeze in a few more syllables (occasionally making it dactylic or anapestic rather than iambic). Fortunately, Larkin himself was not always a stickler in this department either ;-) I believe I managed to retain the overall rhythm and flow of the poem. Where it comes to an accurate rendering of the content and the adequacy of the French phrasings, I'd gladly listen to other people's comments.

Annus Mirabilis (written in 1967; from the collection High Windows, first published 1974)

Annus Mirabilis
